Mr. Humphrey in is ever-strong memephilia has tagged me to share some resolutions with whoever happens to stumble across this soapbox of Sam on the dubya-dubya-dubya.
I would preface this all by saying I sometimes cringe at gleeful proclamations of resolutions, partly because I would hope that we all are constantly in pursuit of self-improvement. The passing of an old year does however, give some food for thought with regards to reflection and all that good stuff. Perhaps it's the delivery of these things that grates my core, rather than the content.
With all of that irrelevancy in mind, I'll try to not get too cheesy (and keep it brief) while fulfilling meme protocol.....
1. Do
I rant. Quite a bit. History has taught us that it's easy to tell people what they should do, but perhaps not so easy to actually go ahead and do it. I really have no excuse now, with a boss who gets 'it', a job I wanted and AdGrads poised in a position to make a tangible difference in the way the ad industry recruits talent. So it's time to hit the bricks and get my hustle on. I look forward to it.
2. Write
I don't define myself by the job I happen to be doing, so I don't think this site should remain confined by the constraints of being an 'adveritising/planning/communications/whatever' space. I want to spread my proverbial keyboard-powered wings and write about things that may not be considered 'industry business' (I think everything in the world is industry specific, because really we're in the business of finding out about human-beings - but that's a separate rant/post).
3. Make
For the first time since I was like 4 or 5, formal education is no longer a part of my life. So I should probably spend some time exploring some of the many things I started doing when I was supposed to be studying, like writing more music, taking more pictures, and fooling around with video.
Take music for example, I've been writing since I was 15; but until now the product of all that writing is either strewn across various hard drives or stacked up in folders in my parents' attic. In the spirit of change, I've put some instrumental demo tracks I've been working on recently up on the evil MySpace. Fooling around more with my guitar and Logic is great. I'll do more of it. Let me know what you think of the noise (I dunno what it is, but I'm 3000 times more insecure about my music stuff than my writing or anything else I do - so be gentle). Maybe I'll have the guts to even lay some vocals down for MySpace. Who knows..
That's my 3 things. There's always more, but if I can make some progress in those 3 I'll be happy(er). This is of course alongside the 4Ls - listen (to everyone), learn (from everything), laugh (everyday) and love (something, someone, whatever). Corny, maybe but true.
It seems like Humphrey's tagged the entire universe in his last post, so if you feel like getting your meme on, do so and leave a link so people can check it out. Boom.
